Robert Weir Allan

The son of a publisher, Robert Weir Allan was born in Glasgow in 1852. Allan began his studies in Glasgow and later studied at Julian’s Atlier in Paris as well as the Cabanel at the Ecole des Beaux Arts from 1875-1881. He was notably a friend of the artist Arthur Melville (1855 - 1904) and was visited by him in Paris in 1878.
In 1881, Allan settled back down in Glasgow and continued to paint abroad through his travels. He often painted his surroundings capturing the beauty of landscape and marine scenes, painting in both oils and watercolours. His travels included Italy, Netherlands and Spain as well as the more distant lands of India, Japan and North Africa.
In 1934 he had the honor of painting the portrait of the former Prime Minister David Lloyd George.
Allan died in 1942.
