About the Artist

Travis Schlaht, born 1975, California. Schlaht received his Bachelor of Arts in studio art from the University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA in 1997. He subsequently moved to New York City and received classical training from Jacob Collins at The Water Street Atelier (1999–2003).

Schlaht believes that an artist should inspire his viewer with beauty in his art. Known for spending hours evaluating his subject before he paints, his initial objective is to connect with individuals, objects, and places so he can paint the truth that he experiences in their presence. Schlaht’s figures, still-lifes, and recent landscapes are not rendered to achieve a literal likeness but to evoke the visceral beauty of his subject matter through his brush stroke.

Schlaht has had several important solo exhibitions in San Francisco and has been included in more than 22 group exhibitions across the U.S. including Texas, Virginia, New York, and California, as well as London, England. Schlaht currently teaches advanced classical drawing and painting in a four-year intensive program at the Grand Central Academy in New York City. He also teaches at the Hudson River School for Landscape with Jacob Collins, Nicholas Hiltner, and Edward Minoff where the importance of field studies and theory is emphasized in the creation of a studio painting. He has been featured in American Artist: “Following Inspiration” (January 2007) and “Six Premier Landscape Artists” (April 2008) along with American Artist Workshop: “The Hudson River School for Landscape” (Winter 2007).
He currently lives, teaches and maintains a studio in New York City with his wife, artist Kate Lehman, and their son Roman.
