About the Artist
Nicolas Legrand was born May 29, 1817 in Mons, France. He began his education as a student of Germain Joseph Hallez (French portrait and genre painter, 1769–1840). He later attended the Brussels Academy from 1839 to 1845, during which time he studied for two years under François Joseph Navez (French portrait and genre painter and painter of historic scences, 1787 – 1869). After living for a time in Paris, he returned later to Mons, France where he stayed until his death in 1883. Legrand published an “Iconographie Montoise” containing 34 portraits.
His Esmeralda is in the possession of the Museum in Mons and the Church of Sainte Elisabeth posesses one of his Madonna paintings.
